Dr Maria Sharmila Alina de Sousa
Dr Sharmila trained in Biomedical Sciences (2007), specialising in Human and Medical Genetics, Cancer Genetics, Thyroidology and Molecular Biology at EPM/Unifesp, receiving a scientific initiation scholarship from FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) to develop diagnostic tests for thyroid cancer types based on oncogene (biomarker) targeting (FAPESP 2006/58262-7). Also at EPM/Unifesp, she holds an MSc in Pharmaceutical Medicine (2009) and an MRes in Genetic Basis of Thyroid Cancer (2009), sponsored by FAPESP (2007/56928-0). She has also been the Students’ Representative/Member at the institutional Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) from EPM/Unifesp since 2005.
Sharmila also holds an MSc in Medicine Science & Society from King’s College London (2010/2011), when she came to London as CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel from Brazil Ministry of Education) sponsored (CAPES 3091-10.4) visiting PhD student to train in the Social Sciences’ qualitative research methods approach at the Centre for Biomedicine & Society (CBAS). Since then, she is fellow researcher at FAPESP grant (N.2010/51547-1) entitled “Inherited Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma: perceptions and attitudes of patients, relatives and health professionals on bioethical issues”.
